The third largest railway system in the world, the Indian Railways, faces challenging demands stemming from its requirements for further expansion, higher speed as well as the circumstances of greater loads and burgeoning passenger numbers. The regular need of the Indian Railways is for wheel sets of greater strength and durability that are necessarily manufactured Standing testament to HMT Machine Tools' prowess, Indian Railways commissioned HMT Machine Tools' technology to meet these challenges. HMT Machine Tools undertook the assignment for the Wheel and Axle Plant (now Rail Wheel Factory) of the Indian Railways at Bangalore, India. The focus of this turnkey project was on "moulding room conveyors and interface items" and "an axle machining and assembly unit". These projects included the supply of large-scale conveyor systems, for which manufacture, HMT Machine Tools obtained an industrial license – a major diversification for HMT. HMT Machine Tools supplied the Wheel and Axle Plant with different types of conveyors such as hydraulically operated pusher beam conveyors, chain-driven live roller conveyors and slat conveyors. All conveyors and other equipment supplied are controlled sequentially and automatically.
Apart from the company's mammoth involvement in the entire axle machining and assembly unit, HMT Machine Tools also supplied a number of sophisticated multi-tasking machines to meet the demanding requirements of the Indian Railways.
